AmeriCorps program helps veterans at Detroit Veteran Expo
The Michigan Veterans Coalition Outreach AmeriCorps Program reaches out to veterans across the state and connects them with resources. The 14 full time members assist by connecting military veterans with services to reduce negative socio-economic consequences exacerbated by chronic health, substance abuse, housing, education and unemployment issues.
The AmeriCorps program recently participated in the Detroit Veteran Expo and connected with thousands of veterans.
“We just helped a veteran who was homeless and living in a car with his wife,” Program Director Scott Nichols said. “We walked him through the process and found them housing and are now helping them with schooling.”
One of the AmeriCorps members contributing is Marlon Matthews, of Detroit, who goes in the community to locate veterans, educates them about the program and tries to get them to visit Focus Hope, a Detroit-based non-profit organization where he is stationed, to get them assistance.
“It makes me feel great after I help somebody,” Matthews said. “I love helping people get something they need.”
Members serve as liaisons to coordinate activities, recruit and manage volunteers, and determine areas of need in partnership with veteran's service organizations (VSO’s). After making contact, members will refer veterans individually to service providers and multiply their impact by educating VSO's, human service agencies and national service programs. . The members are placed at 12 different sites throughout the state with difference agencies.
Nadine Jones is another AmeriCorps member making a difference for veterans. Jones, who comes from a military family and is involved with several veterans’ organizations, is based at the MIAT College of Technology. She joined the program because she wanted to help on a larger scale than just volunteering.
Jones also recently helped efforts for the Detroit Pistons Hoops for Troops basketball game in honor of Veterans Day, which included several recognitions for men and women who have served our country.
She has become very passionate about helping veterans and the AmeriCorps program has helped her take that passion to the next level.
“With this program, I’m changing lives, not just helping,” Jones said. “I’m humbled to help people that gave so much for us.”
