Name: Kristina Coby
Hometown: Morley, Michigan
Title: Volunteer and Community Engagement Director
Education: Legal Studies - Ferris State University
Experience: Beginning in 2000 as the founding director of the United Way of the EUP’s Volunteer Center, I spent every moment since innovating community approaches to serving others. I enjoyed appointments to state and national platforms such as Volunteer Center’s of Michigan’s Executive Committee, the Points of Light Foundation’s Neighboring Task Force, the Hands On Network’s Leadership Faculty, and United Way Worldwide’s Strategic Community Engagement Committee; all of which help to develop best practices and resources for volunteer managers across the nation. One of my most impactful efforts over the years was as co-creator of The Fisher Training, a service-learning academy for teachers that connects their classroom to the community through curriculum based service.
Why I want to be involved in volunteering: Whether we use service as a skill builder, to foster a passion in life, or to join a cause, it has proven itself to be a gateway for that greater sense of purpose and belonging that we are all searching for to get to where we are going in life.
Favorite quote: “Everybody can be great, because anybody can serve.” Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Fun fact: I used to live in a bon-a-fide haunted house.
