MCSC partners with MSU student athletes to help with Flint recycling
Many Michigan State University athletes are well known for their contributions on the court, field or track. However, Spartan student athletes have recently made big contributions to the residents of Flint.
The Michigan Community Service Commission (MCSC) has partnered with MSU, Schupan Recycling and Republic Services to aid the city in recycling and water distribution efforts.
MSU athletes from football, cross country and track, rowing, and swimming and diving—along with Spartan Marching Band members, student group leaders and athletics department staff members—have visited Flint on several occasions to assist with collection of empty water bottles, distribution of recycling bags and providing information on how to curbside recycle.
“Our first recycling event was so successful that the MSU students wanted to come back and help again,” said Ginna Holmes, executive director of MCSC. “We are grateful for their contributions, as well as the contributions of Schupan and Republic for donating their recycling services and expertise.”
The volunteers have included Flint native (current MSU running back) Gerald Holmes, former Spartan wide receiver and current Houston Texan Keith Mumphery, and former NFL wide receiver and Flint native Andre Rison.
Michigan State University basketball head coach Tom Izzo and his team also visited Flint recently to assist in a recycling project. The Spartans helped children at the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Flint prepare bags to be used for recycling water bottles and also created posters to promote recycling.
“I tell my players all the time and I tell myself all the time, the greatest feeling you get is when you help someone else,” Izzo said.
The Spartans were coming off a tough overtime loss to Purdue and it was their only day off of the week, but MSU basketball player Denzel Valentine said he and the team enjoyed traveling to Flint to try and put some smiles on children’s faces.
“It’s good for us to come here and interact with the kids. We get to meet them a little bit and hear their side of the story. See what troubles they are going through and try to give back,” he said.
