MCSC supporting 9/11 Day of Service and Remembrance Volunteer Projects

On the anniversary of the September 11th attacks, Michiganders will unite in service in the same remarkable way that so many came together following the attacks.

The Michigan Community Service Commission, along with the Michigan Nonprofit Association, are supporting eight volunteer projects to honor 9/11 Day of Service and Remembrance that will address disaster preparedness and support first responders, veterans and military families. Through these projects, nearly 750 volunteers will serve more than 3,500 hours.

“The 9/11 Day of Service gives us a chance to remember and reflect, while serving to strengthen communities,” said Ginna Holmes, executive director of the Michigan Community Service Commission. “We are proud to provide opportunities for volunteers to take action to make a difference.”

The Michigan Community Service Commission is supporting the following volunteer projects:

• Warming Hearts – Eastpointe:  “Blessing Bags” will be delivered to veterans being discharged from John Dingell VA Medical Center in Detroit

September 8^th                  

• Laker Elementary – Pigeon: “Be Great – Be Safe” assembly will be held  for Pre-K through 5^th graders to learn how to keep themselves and their families safe in the event of emergencies.   
• United Way of the Lakeshore – Muskegon: “Operation United” will engage hundreds of volunteers to serve military and veteran families with outdoor basic home repair and enhancements

September 9^th                  

• Barry County United Way – Hastings: “Family Safety Binders” will be compiled at Youth Day that will provide information for families to better prepare in the event of an emergency. 

September 11^th                  

• President Ford Council – Boy Scouts – Grand Rapids: “Be Prepared and Disaster Readiness” exercise that will teach scouts to prepare for and respond to emergencies at 2017 Community Day of Remembrance and Scout Salute
• Habitat for Humanity Capital Region – Lansing: “Rock the Block” will engage volunteers with outdoor home repairs and enhancement
• Madonna University – Livonia: Campus-wide food drive for veterans living in Piquette Square (transitional living for former military personnel)
• Levey Middle School – Southfield: Students will be trained for readiness and responding to unplanned events including school evacuation plans. 

The September 11th National Day of Service and Remembrance is the culmination of efforts originally launched in 2002 by the nonprofit 9/11 Day with wide support by the 9/11 community and leading national service organizations. This effort first established the inspiring tradition of engaging in charitable service on 9/11 as an annual and forward-looking tribute to the 9/11 victims, survivors, and those who rose up in service in response to the attacks.
