The Michigan Community Service Commission is pleased to announce the winners of the Michigan Youth for Service Poster Contest.
The Michigan Youth for Service Poster Contest is a statewide competition designed to encourage service work among residents, nonprofit organizations and legislators and engage them in discussions about volunteerism. The Michigan Community Service Commission encourages young artists to create a poster that can be used to promote volunteerism.
This project supports the Commission’s belief that residents of all ages, talents and abilities contribute to community uplift in valuable ways. More than 60 youth from across the state found their voice by creating artwork that depicts what service means to them. A total of 20 finalists were chosen with one overall winner in each of the elementary, middle school, and high school categories.
“We were excited to see the creativity of all the youth entries,” said Michigan Community Service Commission executive director Ginna Holmes. “The posters will be used to inspire others to serve and help Michigan communities”
High School Winner
Fatima Abdulrahman
Fatima is a junior at Edsel Ford High School. She currently lives in Dearborn, but grew up in Dubai, where she began taking art classes as a first grader. She studies hard to maintain a 4.0 GPA, but also enjoys exploring different opportunities in her free time. Her open-minded attitude about life is what drives her to try new things, especially when they allow her to help others. Fatima's poster reflects her engaged attitude and spirit of service. She believes "the world smiles when people are helping each other."
Middle School Winner
Kenna Morgan
Kenna is an eighth grader at Oak Valley Middle School in Commerce Township. Drawing is one of her favorite hobbies, but she also spends time reading, crocheting, running cross country and teaching a martial arts class. Kenna believes that living a life full of unique experiences is a privilege to be shared with those who are less fortunate. She's found that these opportunities bring color to life. Her poster illustrates how a giving hand can help make another person's life more vibrant.
Elementary School winners
Gwen Chrysler and Kelsi Caporosso
Gwen and Kelsi are from Petoskey, where they attend Ottawa Elementary School. They are active students with interests in various extracurricular activities, like participating in school plays and joining the cheerleading squad. They also enjoy making posters together, for their school. Gwen and Kelsi's design shows that anyone can help save the world by volunteering. They believe helping the community is important, and provide a list of different ways to serve and be a superhero.
