Each year, the Regional Russ Mawby Signature Service Projects bring hundreds of AmeriCorps members to various Michigan communities for a day of intensive service. This year several projects were completed on May 18 and 19, visibly demonstrating the power of Michigan's AmeriCorps members in action.
“AmeriCorps members always seems to go above and beyond,” said Michigan Community Service Commission executive director Ginna Holmes. “They accomplish so much during their service year, yet to see them all come together for the Russ Mawby Signature Service Projects and make an impact across the state is truly inspiring.”
Here is a glance at what AmeriCorps members accomplished:
Mid-Michigan
In Lansing, 62 national service members and members and 15 volunteers served at the Fenner Nature Center. They participated in flood recovery efforts across the land, pulling 239 pounds of
West Michigan
In Muskegon, AmeriCorps members spent the day performing blight elimination activities to help restore and beautify the Muskegon Heights community urban core neighborhoods in partnership with Muskegon Urban Safety Corps Program.
Northern Michigan
In East Jordan, a total of 107 AmeriCorps members and volunteers served at six sites. More than two miles of trail were groomed. In addition, there were jobs that were unique to each site such as debris removal, kiosk construction, bridge building, and weeding and planting beds and containers.
Flint/Tri-Cities
In Flint, 150 AmeriCorps members and 15 community volunteers cleaned up the property around the Flint Development Center. They filled 350 leaf bags of yard waste, 75 garbage bags, and secured four blighted buildings.
Southeast Michigan
In Detroit, AmeriCorps programs partnered with Friends of Rouge Park and Friends of the Rouge to host a Rouge Park Appreciation Day. Projects included invasive species removal, park cleanup and maintenance, trail building, and brush overgrowth removal.
Upper Peninsula
In Escanaba, AmeriCorps members and volunteers hosted a literacy event for local families and children. Participants engaged in literacy-themed activities and received information on creative ways to bring literacy to their homes.
In Memoriam of Russ Mawby:
Dr. Russell –“Russ”– Mawby was a tremendous advocate for youth and volunteer service. He spent most of his career leading the W.K. Kellogg Foundation in Battle Creek. Dr. Mawby was instrumental in convening a series of meetings leading to the formation of the Michigan Community Service Commission. Dr. Mawby passed away on October 20, 2017, leaving a legacy as a philanthropic leader and devoted community service advocate. To honor Dr. Mawby’s commitment to volunteerism, service, and AmeriCorps, it was only fitting that the service project has been named Michigan’s AmeriCorps Russ Mawby Signature Service Project for more than a decade.
