2017 Russell G. Mawby Award for Philanthropy- Joseph L. Hudson
Joseph (Joe) L. Hudson has been a lifelong philanthropic leader and innovator. His actions have strengthened the southeast Michigan region and have greatly contributed to its revitalization. Retired Chairman and CEO of the J.L. Hudson Company, Joe started volunteering early in his career – elected as a hospital trustee at the age of 25. His deep love for and sense of responsibility toward his community has led him to create and sustain lasting philanthropic and nonprofit institutions. He served as founding chairman of both New Detroit and the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan – now one of the top 25 in the country; as well as held leadership positions at the Hudson-Webber Foundation, the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Detroit Medical Center and more. Joe, 86, helps accomplish great goals. As Board Chair of the Community Foundation for 19 years, he helped generate special projects to grow organizational endowments, connect nonprofits with capital improvement grants and build a network of greenways.
Michigan is forever grateful to Joe Hudson for this vision, his resources and his service. “I don’t know of anyone who has higher integrity or is more trusted in our community than Joe,” notes Eugene A. Miller, retired Chairman of Comerica. He has changed countless lives for the better, while also improving philanthropy for the future. As James B. Nicholson, current chair of the community foundation shares, “Our community is a better place for his efforts.”
