Education Service Leader - University of Michigan, University of Michigan-Dearborn, Michigan State University and Wayne State University
Education Service Leader Award: honors schools, colleges, universities and other organizations that support youth making a difference in their communities.
UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN, UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN- DEARBORN, MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY AND WAYNE STATE UNIVERSITY work together to promote and support literacy in metro Detroit through the Books for a Benefit program. The program encourages students to explore reading in a way that promotes not only academic drive, but also self-expression and a lifelong appreciation for literature. With 120 active members, over 2,000 hours have been logged in projects like after school tutoring, library construction for the homeless, pen pal projects for refugee students, book drives and book clubs. The nonprofit also holds a book club at the VA Hospital in Ann Arbor, allowing hospitalized veterans to choose books and form bonds with students from the University of Michigan. Over the past three years, Books for a Benefit has received $25,000 in donations and over 10,000 books, all of which have gone directly back to the communities they serve. “We recognize education as a path to innovation and success, and we dream of a world where that path is open to all people, regardless of their background,” said Essam Al-Snayyan, Books for a Benefit co-founder.
