Lifetime Humanitarian - Richard Garber
Lifetime Humanitarian Award: honors individuals or families that have demonstrated a lifetime of outstanding civic and charitable responsibility to a community or organization.
Richard Garber of Saginaw became one of the youngest dealers in General Motors’ history at age 25, but in addition to his three decades of business success, Dick has continued his family’s tradition of service.
Dick has grown the car dealership business under the umbrella of the Garber Management Group, employing over 1,400 people and producing over $700 million in annual sales.
However, in the tradition of his grandfather and father, Dick has made serving his community a major priority in his life. He has been an active participant and contributor to numerous community organizations and non-profits providing leadership, service and financial contributions.
“Mr. Garber is an extraordinary example of living his life by the belief that ‘of those that have much, much is expected,’” said CAN Council Great Lakes Bay Regional President Suzanne Greenberg. “His commitment to our children and families is unwavering.”
He has showed his commitment to the Saginaw community time and time again. He helped fundraise $2.6 million and plan for the CAN Council Great Lakes Bay Region’s desperate need for an addition to the facility. The updates to the facility allowed the organization to provide a space for forensic interviews for children who were suspected victims of severe abuse and also allowed space to provide training for adults to keep children safe. Dick also pulled together a team of 100 community leaders and designed a capital campaign of $4 million to redesign and update the YMCA facility. He helped bring the Saginaw Spirit hockey team to the community by becoming the owner and governor of the Ontario Hockey League franchise. Dick has been a longtime contributor to many local nonprofits and provided leadership by serving on multiple boards.
His commitment to volunteerism can be seen throughout his entire organization, with all 1,400 employees across 15 new vehicle dealerships, in various fundraisers, events and directly helping people in the community.
“In this region, when people talk about servant leadership and generosity, one name always rises to the top, Dick Garber,” said Greenberg.
