Youth Volunteer of the Year - Ahmad Hider

Ahmad Hider has transformed the health and education of his community. In response to the alarming death toll of the opioid crisis, Ahmad created Heal-Move-Shift, a nonprofit organization that addresses the social determinants of health inequities through  three tenets of cardiovascular, nutritional and mental health. Along with physical health, Ahmad also felt compelled to address the deterioration of mental health amongst the youth in his communities. By partnering with Microsoft, Heal-Move-Shift provides recipients with a technology-based education, covering the principles of cardiovascular health, nutritional eating and mental health. The organization’s efforts do not stop at providing information, but also provide seminars, workouts and clinical checkups. Ahmad’s commitment to service through healthcare also shows in his time at the University of Michigan Health Systems, where he has volunteered hundreds of hours. His passion for educational equity was inspired by his experience as a first-generation college student with immigrant parents who were not afforded the same opportunities. His investment to this cause shows in his years as an AmeriCorps City Year member, where he served as a math aide. Ahmad has also improved college readiness by creating an SAT preparatory program, as well as hosting workshops that assist with personal essays and discuss the social transition to college. He will be studying at the University of Cambridge this fall for his Master of Philosophy-Translational Biomedical Research. In only five years, Ahmad’s innovation and compassion have made a lasting impact on his community, their health and their educational opportunities.
