Mentor Michigan+ provided nearly 200 complimentary registrations to the virtual National Mentoring Summit. Several Michigan organizations were able to attend the Summit for the first time and gained access to national resources.
Michigan attendees joined nearly 3,000 individuals nationwide for the 11th Annual Summit that focused on Rising to the Moment to support youth through mentoring.
Michigan Rep. Debra Lawrence (D-MI 14th District) provided a video for the opening of the Summit.
“Young people need someone to lean on and guide them through this difficult time,” Lawrence said in the video. “Mentors help facilitate the opportunity and cultivate a young person’s growth and potential and we know that is life changing.”
Our strong Michigan contingent was proud to join the nationwide mentoring movement that included practitioners, researchers, philanthropic investors, youth leaders, government and civic leaders, and local affiliates for the annual opportunity to advance a collective mentoring agenda, strengthen programs and practices.
“The workshops that I attended were phenomenal. The concept of connecting with people from all over the country has lifted my spirits about the work that we are doing,” Darryl L. Johnson, Executive Director of Mentor2Youth said. “The thought of simply ‘not being alone’ in this endeavor was so comforting. Our organization is evolving and there are still a lot of unknowns. This conference has assured me that I am not alone and that there is light in the darkness.”
Workshops and networking opportunities were available throughout the duration of the Summit, covering a variety of topics including mentoring programs in foster care systems, improving technology use for organizations, enhancing capacity, and mentor recruitment strategies.
“We are extremely thankful to MENTOR for working with us to ensure that so many of our mentoring partners were able to attend the event. There are several smaller organizations that are doing tremendous things and Mentor Michigan was pleased to allow them to participate.” said David Martus, Director of Youth Initiatives for the Michigan Community Service Commission.
