Michiganders encouraged to volunteer for 9/11 National Day of Service
Michigan Community Service Commission funding 19 volunteer projects
The Michigan Community Service Commission will support 19 Michigan organizations hosting volunteer projects for the 9/11 National Day of Service and encourages all Michiganders to serve.
Volunteers will serve veterans, military personnel, and first responders and also focus on environmental improvement, disaster preparedness and support youth education.
The projects will engage 2,800 volunteers who will serve more than 7,000 hours.
“Serving others is a wonderful way to unite individuals and strengthen communities to restore the spirit of kind-heartedness that followed the 9/11 tragedy,” said MCSC Executive Director Ginna Holmes. “We encourage everyone to find a way to volunteer and make a difference.”
The Michigan Community Service Commission issued nearly $10,000 in grants ranging from $100 to $1,000. Funding has also been provided by AmeriCorps.

Volunteers will paint an outdoor mural on the building in the theme of empowering women. Volunteers are welcome to join the youth group designing the mural. |

International Academy, Days of Service |
Student Volunteers will recycle plastic grocery bags into sleeping mats for individuals experiencing homelessness. The students will participate in service to benefit Bowers farm, The children's Center, and Grace Centers of Hope.
Donations of knitting hooks, paper gift bags, and other items are welcome. |

2023 9/11 Never Forget Day of Service seeks volunteers for multiple projects including preparing the U of M community garden space for Spring of 2024. There are also projects for people of all abilities to support pollinator gardens in empty spaces in Genesee County. |

On multiple days, volunteers are invited to join the annual river clean up. The main event is 9/9/23. The rest of the week is done in a "deconstructed" manner, where volunteer teams identify sites, pick up supplies, and do their own cleanups, leaving trash in predetermined areas. |

This 9/11 project focuses on inclusion through service and all groups and individuals are welcome to join for the following projects: 1. Beach Cleanup with the Great Lakes Alliance. 2. Community Clean Ups: Engage in cleaning public spaces, including parks, streets, and Senior apartment areas. |

Volunteers are invited to participate in the annual day of caring at multiple sites. Activities include visiting with seniors and veterans; cleaning and organizing pantries at agencies, yard clean ups at nonprofits and senior residents.
Volunteers are also needed to help assemble school supply kits for 11 county schools. Volunteers will assemble cleaning items, student supplies and other items needed for each school.
Volunteers are welcome to donate items as well. |

AmeriCorps members along with community members will improve safety and reduce crime in neighborhoods on 9/11. As a part of a neighborhood collaboration with local police, Volunteers will work with local businesses and private residences to provide education on how to reduce crimes of opportunity and volunteers will post signs on street facing areas to raise awareness on crime prevention. |
