Boys and Girls Club of the Muskegon Lakeshore
Boys & Girls Club of the Muskegon Lakeshore
Established in 2015 as a safe haven for children during after school hours, Boys & Girls Club of the Muskegon Lakeshore (BGCML) has a mission to inspire all young people to reach their full potential.
The organization has undergone a remarkable evolution in just nine years, growing into a comprehensive youth development organization that continues to impact the lives of young individuals across Muskegon County. Today, BGCML stands as a beacon of empowerment, guiding hundreds of youth each year on their journey toward great futures.
In a significant stride forward, the year 2021 brought a pivotal acquisition: a 40,000 square foot facility that houses a fitness center on the shores of Muskegon Lake. Erected more than four decades ago by the YMCA, then taken over by the Community College, the Lakeshore Fitness Center closed its doors due to COVID. The acquisition of the building and expansion of the Club’s mission to include the newly formed Neal Fitness Center in addition to creating a permanent home for BGCML’s after-school and summer programs marked a momentous step towards establishing an inclusive community center in Muskegon, to be named “The Clubhouse”.
In the fall of 2022, the first phase of the facility's renovation broke ground—a transformation that included the addition of 20,000 square feet of office spaces, the separation of the Neal Fitness Center and BGCML spaces, and a comprehensive upgrade to meet contemporary codes and standards in the newly designed 60,000 square foot building.
The Clubhouse renovation project has set forth several ambitious goals aimed at modernizing and enhancing the facilities to meet the evolving needs of the Muskegon community. These goals encompass a range of areas including improving the quality of life for residents, fostering economic development, strengthening community trust, reducing costs for out of school programming, reducing costs for health and wellness programming for all ages, and by creating job opportunities. Through the development of The Clubhouse, which houses the Bob & Merle Scolnik Boys & Girls Club, Neal Fitness Center (NFC), and i’move Physical Therapy, there is an anticipated reach of 6,000 community members in the opening year of operation, with plans for growth in future years.
