Flint Institute of Science and History and Sloan Museum of Discovery
Flint Institute of Science and History/Sloan Museum of Discovery
Hands-on science and regional history are major features of the re-imagined Sloan Museum of Discovery, which re-opened July 16, 2022, after an extensive renovation and expansion. But Sloan originally opened in 1966 as the Sloan Panorama of Transportation, named after longtime General Motors President and CEO, Alfred P. Sloan. Back then, it was all about transportation and a place to house the Genesee County Historical Society's massive collections.
The Flint Institute of Science and History (FISH) requests funding for the Greater Flint Communities for the Future program. The Sloan Museum of Discovery reopened in July 2022 after a 3-year $30 million dollar expansion and renovation project which was developed to create a more community focused museum facility. The expansion almost doubled the square footage of the museum from 58,000 square feet to 107,000 square feet. The new museum features 5 major exhibit galleries, hands on Learning-Labs, community meeting rooms, a Discovery Lab makers space, a new Coffee Beanery Café, new collections storage facilities, and more.
The Greater Flint Communities for the Future program brings together a set of facility improvements along with related programming to help the greater Flint community connect and grow. It adds green renewable energy infrastructure to the existing Sloan Museum of Discovery facility to educate community audiences about the importance of renewable energy sources in our community. Associated exhibits, camps and programs help emphasize education on this topic, especially for the youth in the community. Facility improvements create better meeting spaces and help spread community information. Scholarship programs and travel vouchers make the programs accessible to community households at or below the ALICE limits for Genesee County residents.
