Lansing School District
Lansing School District (LSD) grant from The Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity Community Grants program will be invested in the Lansing School District Hill Center Gymnasium Renovation and Renewable Energy Project. This transformative initiative aims to achieve a trifecta of ambitious goals: revitalizing a crucial community center gymnasium by delivering long-awaited upgrades to its HVAC system, lighting, and aesthetics; utilizing renewable solar energy from a planned array adjacent to the gym to power a portion of the new HVAC system; and creating hands-on learning opportunities for the district’s CTE students and community members.
The heart of the project lies in the overhaul of the shared gymnasium space with the City of Lansing's Schmidt Community Center. Outdated HVAC components, remnants of the building's 1969 construction, will be replaced with state-of-the-art electrified heating and cooling systems, electrical enhancements, lighting upgrades, and overdue aesthetic improvements. This rejuvenation enhances functionality and user experience, bringing new life to this essential community space.
Simultaneously, the project forms a cornerstone of the $8 million 5.8 Megawatt ground-mounted solar array commitment to renewable energy, offering Career and Technical Education students hands-on learning opportunities in the burgeoning field of green technologies. The gymnasium's HVAC and lighting systems will be predominantly powered by a solar array, representing a resolute shift towards sustainable energy sources, underlining our dedication to environmental stewardship and a cleaner future.
This project represents a linchpin in LSD's comprehensive environmental sustainability plan for the gymnasium and its surroundings. The shared Hill Center and Schmidt Community Center gymnasium symbolize the nexus of our CTE and sustainability objectives, culminating in a visionary renovation designed to elevate outcomes for students and the broader community.
