The Botanical Society of Northwest Michigan
The Botanical Society of Northwest Michigan
Located on the site of the former Traverse City State Hospital farm, The Botanic Garden at Historic Barns Park is northern Michigan's primary resource for horticultural education and design, with an emphasis on environmental stewardship, historic preservation, and research.
Since The Garden’s opening in 2014, visitors of all ages and diverse abilities have participated in a wide variety of classes, workshops, demonstrations, presentations, and on-site explorations. As the Garden’s popularity has grown, demand for community education programming exceeded the capacity of its single classroom located in the Visitor Center.
The new Community Education Center will be located on the second level of the historic 1900 era brick dairy barn. It will complement, augment, and amplify the impact of The Botanic Garden to reach across different age groups, ethnic backgrounds, and socio-economic classes to engage and educate. While the Botanic Garden attracts visitors from throughout the state and nation, the Community Education Center will most often serve the 110,000 residents of Grand Traverse County.
The new Community Education Center will allow expansion of programs, demonstrations, events, and exhibits that focus on a range of topics linked by The Garden’s commitment to promoting environmental stewardship, human health and well-being, preservation of the unique history of The Garden’s site, and celebration of the cultural heritage diversity of the community and region.
