The Sound Mind Sound Body Foundation
The Sound Mind Sound Body Foundation
The Sound Mind Sound Body Foundation (SMSB), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, currently operates the largest a college readiness program, which serves 5,000 students annually. The academy was founded by Hampton University classmates and Detroit-area high school alums who returned home to give back and uplift their city.
Over the course of 20 years, the academy has successfully transformed from a one-day football camp to a year-round academic Out-of-School Time (OST) program, positively impacting the lives of more than 30,000 students in the Metropolitan Detroit region and across the country.
The mission of Sound Mind Sound Body is to use athletics as a vehicle to teach youth to put equal amounts of energy into academics, life skills, and character development.
The LEO grant will allow SMSB to acquire a property serving as a community center for over 2,000 residents in District 4. The new community center will be named The Sound Mind Sound Body Community Engagement Center for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.
The engagement center is centrally located within three miles of seven Detroit and Harper Woods schools, facilitating easy access and support for continued programming and other essential programming. The 38,000-square-foot facility sits on 1.8 acres of land, allowing SMSB to provide simultaneous services such as workforce training, dedicated programming for seniors, recreational and athletic activities, meeting space for community organizations, and childcare services. Moreover, the facility will allow the SMSB to house its current programming, such as the Michigan Department of Education Out of School Time Program, which currently serves 500 students, the US Department of Education TRIO Talent Search Program, and the Sound Mind Sound Body Youth Association, which contains has roughly 3,000 football and cheerleaders participating.
