Whaley Childrens Center
Whaley Children's Center
Whaley Children's Center was founded by Robert H. Whaley, in Flint, Michigan, and was incorporated January 26, 1924 with a mission of providing care for "homeless and neglected children." It has since become a pillar in the Flint community. Throughout the years, the services offered by the organization have changed to accommodate the evolving needs of the community , but WCC’s mission remains the same: to empower youth and families to overcome trauma. There is a total commitment to treating all children and families with fairness, dignity and respect regardless of race, age, creed, ethnicity, orientation or ability.
Whaley Children's Center (WCC) is a distinguished residential treatment facility accredited by CARF (Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities), specializing in serving the community of Michigan’s at-risk foster youth aged five through seventeen who have endured severe abuse and neglect. As of 2022, it also operates an Independent Living Home that is designed to help youth transitioning out of foster care from ages 16-21. In the State of Michigan, there is a severe lack of Independent Living Programs, leaving many aging out of the system with little to no resources to help them navigate their entrance into adulthood.
Whaley Children’s Center Center’s capital project is designed around costly renovations including the replacement of the roof of the Lafontaine Learning Academy, or school building, which was last replaced in the late 1970s, as well as the roof to the boys group home, the Optimist House which hasn't been replaced since 1990. On all of the main campus buildings, new exterior doors are needed. The doors are unique in that they require key fob entry into the buildings and are made with special plexiglass for safety and security. This project would allow us to upgrade the HVAC system on campus to bring it up to current environmental and health standards.
