LANSING—The USA Freedom Corps and President Bush’s focus on increasing volunteerism across America present tremendous opportunities for Michigan communities and the dedicated nonprofit organizations that serve their needs.
While following President Bush’s activities today at an emergency shelter in Philadelphia where he espoused the merits of the USA Freedom Corps, Russell G. Mawby, chair of the Michigan Community Service Commission, said, “Strengthening communities and addressing local needs through volunteer service is at the heart of our mission. We commend President Bush for his commitment and diligence in creating the Freedom Corps and encourage him to rely on the expertise of state and local organizations during its development.”
The USA Freedom Corps calls for an unprecedented expansion of volunteer programs, including a new Citizen Corps to support homeland security, an increase in the Peace Corps for overseas service, and an expansion of Senior Corps and AmeriCorps programs. The Michigan Community Service Commission (MCSC) currently funds 26 Michigan’s AmeriCorps programs to engage more than 900 individuals (called AmeriCorps members) in community service activities statewide. Last year, a similar number of AmeriCorps members recruited an average of 15 volunteers each to assist them with tutoring and mentoring children; conserving and preserving Michigan’s natural resources; teaching parenting skills to teen mothers; engaging children in successful conflict resolution; meeting the needs of the hungry and homeless. The MCSC also provides funding for programs that encourage school-aged youth to serve their community and provides capacity-building grants for volunteer resource centers.
"Societies change one heart, one soul, one conscience at a time," Bush said during a round-table discussion on the merits of community service. The USA Freedom Corps will help focus our nation, our state, and our communities on the role each of us can play to make each Michigan neighborhood a safe and healthy place to live, learn, and grow.
