Governor Granholm Appoints Jim Vella to State Service Commission
"Jim is committed to bringing together the public, private and nonprofit sectors to promote volunteerism as a solution to help address many of our communities' most critical challenges," Granholm said. "Under his leadership the Commission will continue to engage Michigan's citizens in an effort to make our neighborhoods and cities even better places to live."
The MCSC is charged with funding and supporting programs to encourage Michigan residents to volunteer.
"It's an honor to serve on the Commission," said incoming chair Jim Vella. "I look forward to leading the Michigan Community Service Commission in the ongoing revitalization efforts of our state. And I look forward to working with my colleagues on the Commission, as well as with the many stakeholders in our communities."
Vella succeeds Michigan's First Gentleman, Daniel G. Mulhern, who served as chair of the MCSC since 2003.
"I am grateful for the opportunity to lead the MCSC for the past six years," said Mulhern. "During my tenure, the Commission has developed and implemented a number of significant initiatives including Mentor Michigan and other community-based volunteer programs that have made a tremendous difference in the lives of Michigan's children and families. I look forward to working with Jim as the Commission focuses on 2010 and beyond."
Vella, a Detroit native, joined Ford in 1988. After serving in various leadership roles in Public Affairs and Corporate Communications, he was named to his current position in December 2006. In addition, Vella serves as the Chair of the Ford Motor Company Fund Board of Trustees; Board of Trustees for America's Promise; Executive Committee, United Way for Southeastern Michigan; Executive Committee, New Detroit; Executive Committee, Detroit Renaissance; Board of Advisors, The Ad Council; Board of Advisors, the Henry Ford Heart and Vascular Institute; Dean's Advisory Council, University of Michigan-Dearborn; Corporate Advisory Board, University Musical Society; and the National Steering Committee, We The People. Additionally, he also serves as a board member for the National Museum of American History, Smithsonian; and the Hispanic Association of Corporate Responsibility (HACR).
Vella holds a bachelor's degree in Communications from the University of Detroit-Mercy.
