2026 Fatality Information

Use the information in this table to build hazard awareness and prevent risk for similar occurrences in your workplace. This table shares preliminary details about many of the fatalities reported to the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration. These descriptions reflect information provided to MIOSHA at the initial report of the incident and are not the result of the official MIOSHA investigation.

1. 1/10/2026 Tow Truck Helper 26 Caught in or between On January 10, 2026, a 26-year-old tow truck helper was standing at the rear of the tow truck cab when they suffered a fatal head injury after becoming caught between the carriage and the cab. Greenville

2/6/2026 Laborer 53 Struck by On February 6, 2026. a 53-year-old laborer was fatally injured while disassembling an excavator. Two employees were standing in the bucket of a front-end loader attempting to reinstall a pin on the arm of an excavator. The operator of the front-end loader went to start and move the excavator arm to help with reinstalling the pin. While doing so the excavator cab and arm rotated pinning the victim between the excavator arm and the bucket of the front-end loader. The employee was transported to the local hospital where they were pronounced dead. Flint
3. 2/17/2026 Painter 20 Inhalation On February 17, 2026, a 20-year-old painter was overcome by air contaminants, most likely hydrogen sulfide, when he attempted to rescue another worker who had collapsed in a pit while unplugging a groundwater well. North Street
4. 2/17/2026 Laborer 21 Inhalation On February 17, 2026, a 21-year-old laborer was overcome by air contaminants, most likely hydrogen sulfide, while working in a pit to unplug a groundwater well. The well was located at a vacant residence that was undergoing maintenance and repair prior to resale. The victim had poured muriatic acid into the well to unplug it. North Street
5. 3/4/2026 Owner 55 Caught in or between On March 4, 2026, a 55-year-old owner was attempting to unload vehicles from a car hauler truck. During the task, a vehicle door inadvertently opened and struck the controls to the hydraulic system of the car hauler’s upper platform. The upper platform then rose and crushed the victim between platforms of the car hauler. Eastpointe
6. 3/13/2026 Department of Public Works Supervisor 43 Struck by On March 13, 2026, a 43-year-old department of public works supervisor was cutting tree limbs that had fallen onto a roadway due to high winds. During the task, a limb from a nearby tree fell and struck the worker. Huntington Woods
7. 3/23/2026 Service Technician 19 Struck by On March 23, 2026, a 19-year-old service technician responded to a disabled vehicle service call on the shoulder of eastbound I-696 near Mound Road. The disabled vehicle driver had deployed cones/triangles to alert oncoming traffic. Upon arrival, the technician activated the vehicle's emergency lights and exited to provide assistance. While moving between vehicles, another vehicle traveling eastbound on I-696 abruptly cut off a second vehicle causing the second vehicle to swerve striking the victim. Warren

On March 24, 2026, a 45-year-old school bus driver was assisting another bus driver in navigating around a semi-truck that was blocking the road. After assisting the bus driver, the employee was struck by a passing vehicle. The victim was taken to the hospital. The employer was notified the employee died from their injuries March 25, 2026.

9. 4/8/2026 Shipping Clerk 50 Caught in or between On April 8, 2026, a 50-year-old shipping clerk was attempting to load a plastic injection mold into a flatbed trailer using a powered industrial truck. During the task, the victim exited the powered industrial truck and was crushed between it and the trailer. The victim was taken to a hospital, where they died during surgery. Rose City
10. 4/15/2026 Tow Truck Driver 45 Struck by On April 15, 2026, a 45-year-old tow truck driver was performing hydraulic maintenance beneath a rollback (flatbed) tow truck when the hydraulics failed. The flatbed dropped and crushed the victim. Detroit
11. 5/12/2026 Roofer 26 Fall (from elevation) On May 11, 2026, a 26-year-old roofer was working on the roof of a garage throwing shingles in the dumpster when the worker fell headfirst onto the concrete driveway. The victim was taken to the hospital and died from their injuries on May 12, 2026. Marshall
12. 5/18/2026 Die Setter 34 Struck by On May 18, 2026, a 34-year-old die setter was assisting in setting a die. While the die was being lowered, the crane operator noticed the locating pin was in wrong position and began raising the die back up. As the worker climbed off the bolster to locate the pin, the die caught another die, began swinging then struck and pinned the victim between the two dies. Howell
13. 5/26/2026 Transportation Maintenance Worker 49 Struck by On May 26, 2026, a 49-year-old transportation maintenance worker was patching potholes along the right shoulder of Northbound US-127, South of Holt Road. A passenger vehicle swerved to avoid the arrow-board truck, and the driver subsequently lost control. The vehicle entered the work area and struck the victim. Mason

5/30/2026 Laborer 50 Struck by On May 30, 2026, a 50-year-old laborer was performing tree trimming operations when a tree branch fell and struck the employee in the head. Monroe
16. 6/6/2026 Farm Worker 23 Caught in or between On June 6, 2026, a 23-year-old farm worker was transporting newborn livestock approximately two miles from one farm location to another on a county road with an off-road vehicle. While attempting to turn at an intersection, the vehicle rolled and pinned the victim to the ground. Daggett
17. 6/15/2026 Arborist 52 Struck by On June 15, 2026, a 52-year-old arborist was sitting on a log when a branch from an adjacent tree fell and struck the victim in the head. Edwardsburg
18. 6/18/2026 Operator 22 Caught in or between On June 18, 2026, a 22-year-old operator drove a pickup truck and trailer onto a construction worksite to unload an excavator. Moments later, the victim was found pinned beneath the hydraulic arm of the trailer's liftgate. Grand Rapids
19. 1/4/2026 Firefighter 47 Struck by On January 4, 2026, a 47-year-old firefighter was struck by falling debris while fighting a residential fire. The victim died the following day from a hemorrhage/stroke at the base of brain from being struck by the debris. Detroit

There were 46 MIOSHA-related deaths in 2025. 2009 saw the lowest number with 24.
