Quality Assurance for Stereotactic Breast Biopsy
Discussion:
Questions about stereotactic breast biopsy quality assurance requirements will be discussed on this page.
Yes, the manufacturer's specification is acceptable. Although Rule 687(d) states that the maximum compression force for the power drive mode shall be between 25 pounds and 45 pounds. We agree with the view of the ACR. From their stereotactic breast biopsy FAQ document:
"...Hologic MultiCare Platinum's automatic compression only reaches a maximum of 15 lbs., manual compression can provide nearly 30 lbs. of compression force. Your facility should watch to see that these numbers do not change significantly over time (both during compression and over the years), and that the compression meets the manufacture's specifications."
To ensure that adequate patient compression can be achieved, this unit should also be tested using manual compression. Under manual compression the machine should be able to provide between 25-45 pounds of force.
