DETROIT, Mich. — As competition kicks off in Detroit for the FIRST Robotics World Championships, Michigan’s movers and shakers are prepping for a day of showcasing the benefits of living and working in the Great Lakes state.
Imagine Michigan is one of the many events happening in Detroit during the three-day robotics extravaganza. The expo seeks to connect FIRST participants and spectators with Michigan’s growing companies and top-notch universities.
Through 2024, Michigan will have more than 800,000 career openings to fill in the manufacturing, health care and information technology industries. And FIRST Robotics has a proven track record of preparing students for those careers. More than 75 percent of FIRST alumni are currently in a STEM field as a student or professional.
“There’s a high demand for innovative thinkers and doers, and those who have the ability to adapt to the growing need of lifelong learning,” Roger Curtis, director of the Talent and Economic Development Department of Michigan said. “Imagine Michigan is an opportunity to connect the talent FIRST participants inherently posses with Michigan-based companies and world-class universities.”
Imagine Michigan will take place from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. April 27 at GM World inside the General Motors Renaissance Center. Admission is free and interactive displays range from virtual welding simulators and 3D printers, to scaled autonomous vehicles and high-tech robots.
“We want to connect Michigan leaders in the technology, manufacturing and higher-education realm with the world’s next generation of talent, knowing that FIRST participants possess many of the in-demand skills companies are actively seeking.” Curtis added. “Michigan has a lot of potential, and it’s okay to toot our own horn from time to time.”
