Brinkmann Pumps Inc Earns Exemplary MSHARP Workplace Safety and Health Status
September 16, 2021
Brinkmann Pumps, Inc. of Wixom, MI is now one of seven Michigan companies recognized by the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA) for implementing and maintaining outstanding workplace safety and health standards.
Brinkmann Pumps, Inc., a leading provider of pumps, motors, and digital solutions for industrial fluid applications, was awarded its first Michigan Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (MSHARP) certification from MIOSHA.
MSHARP recognizes workplaces that have achieved excellence in their safety and health practices, placing these companies among the elite few that go above and beyond MIOSHA standards. Priority is given to companies on the MIOSHA list of high-hazard industries or those that are part of MIOSHA's strategic plan to help them develop, implement and continuously improve the effectiveness of their workplace safety and health management system.
"MIOSHA is thrilled to honor Brinkmann Pumps with its first-ever MSHARP certification in recognition of their winning, collaborative efforts to achieve workplace safety and health excellence," said MIOSHA Director Bart Pickelman. "Their commitment to a strong safety culture is commendable and sets a positive example for other Michigan small businesses."
Brinkmann Pumps has an exceptional system in place which incorporates each of the seven required MSHARP elements: hazard anticipation and detection, hazard prevention and control, planning and evaluation, administration and supervision, safety and health training, management leadership and employee participation.
"Our employees are our most valuable asset, so keeping them safe is not only our primary goal and task at hand, but also the foundation for a successful future of this company," said Stefan Hellweg, President of Brinkmann Pumps, Inc. "This award is proof of our entire team's commitment to our quality and health and safety policies and standards."
The MIOSHA Onsite Consultation Program operates MSHARP and works with employers to help them become self-sufficient in managing occupational safety and health. Onsite MIOSHA consultants provide feedback on best practices offering an incentive of 12-month exemption from regular scheduled MIOSHA inspections.
MSHARP requires a comprehensive consultation visit and the correction of all serious workplace safety and health hazards to achieve certification, emphasizing employers need to proactively anticipate accident and illness risks, rather than reacting to them. Best practices that demonstrate Brinkmann Pumps' safety and health management system excellence include:
Workplace Hazard Assessment - MIOSHA's Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Standard requires employers to conduct a workplace hazard assessment and train employees who are required to wear PPE. One of the best practices identified was the employer's workplace hazard assessment process. Brinkmann Pumps listed each positions' associated job tasks, along with any potential associated hazards, required PPE for each task and any related engineering or administrative controls that will be used to address potential hazards. This type of hazard assessment process was completed for all production floor jobs, as well as for all office jobs and documented in two summary tables.
Employee Involvement - Brinkmann Pumps places a strong emphasis on employee involvement through all aspects of their safety and health program. Employees are consulted whenever their leaderships considers a change in processes or equipment and value is placed on their input. Team members are also encouraged to take personal ownership of safety and health tasks and procedures, and given the training, tools and time to complete these items in an effective way.
