MIHI helps bridge digital divide, provides application details for Michigan’s BEAD program, releases eligible locations
December 10, 2024
Lansing, MI — The Michigan High-Speed Internet Office (MIHI) is taking a significant step toward bridging the digital divide by announcing the release of the draft Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) eligible location information to prepare internet service providers, communities and others interested in the program for the application period that will launch Jan. 9, 2025. Providing access to affordable high-speed internet will benefit more Michiganders with online learning, healthcare and economic opportunities.
“This is another exciting step forward for Michigan to close the digital divide and ensure that every home, business and community has access to the high-speed internet they need to thrive in today’s digital age,” said Eric Frederick, Michigan’s Chief Connectivity Officer. “By focusing on sustainable, resilient and scalable infrastructure, the BEAD Program will have a generational impact on Michigan’s economic growth, educational opportunities and overall quality of life.”
BEAD represents the largest investment in high-speed internet infrastructure in U.S. history, administered by the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA). Michigan has been allocated $1.559 billion for this transformative program – the fourth largest allocation in the country.
Designed to connect unserved and underserved homes and businesses, BEAD will provide high-speed internet to more than 238,000 locations statewide in all 83 counties. Beyond infrastructure, the program will address critical issues such as affordability, digital skills and device access to ensure sustainable connectivity for all Michiganders.
BEAD will be implemented as a competitive grant program, with applicants proposing projects to deliver reliable, high-speed internet to eligible locations. Successful applicants will receive funding to construct scalable, resilient infrastructure capable of meeting Michigan’s connectivity needs for the next 30 years and beyond.
MIHI encourages organizations interested in participating in BEAD to pre-register as soon as possible to ensure a timely review process.
- Pre-registration period: Open now, with submissions accepted through March 10, 2025. Early submission is encouraged, as submissions made by Jan. 9 will be replied to with feedback and requests for clarification if additional information is needed.
- Project application window: Opens Jan. 9, 2025, and closes April 9, 2025.
Through extensive community engagement and public feedback, MIHI tailored the BEAD Program to ensure a lasting impact on Michigan’s digital landscape. This program is a cornerstone of the state’s commitment to building a digitally inclusive future where every resident has access to high-speed internet.
