June 29, 2026
Voluntary program helps employers reduce injuries and highlight a commitment to worker protection
The Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA) joined Marathon Petroleum’s Romulus terminal employees for a ceremony, awarding the facility the Michigan Voluntary Protection Program STAR certification for its outstanding workplace safety and health management system.
The MVPP STAR is MIOSHA’s highest workplace safety and health recognition and is awarded to employers that demonstrate exemplary safety and health management systems that go above and beyond MIOSHA requirements.
“Marathon Petroleum’s Romulus terminal has demonstrated that a strong safety culture requires leadership commitment, employee involvement and a continuous focus on identifying and preventing hazards,” said MIOSHA Director Bart Pickelman. “This certification reflects the hard work of employees and management to make workplace safety and health a core value.”

MVPP recognizes employers with effective safety and health management systems that include strong management commitment, meaningful employee involvement, comprehensive hazard prevention and control, worksite analysis and safety and health training.
The Romulus terminal is Marathon Petroleum’s sixth MVPP STAR site in Michigan, giving Marathon the most MVPP STAR worksites of any employer in the state.

The Romulus terminal is a 26-acre facility that includes two production buildings and 10 other structures. The site’s certification recognizes Marathon’s ongoing efforts to prevent workplace injuries and illnesses through strong safety and health practices, employee engagement and continuous improvement.
“Earning MVPP STAR certification is a meaningful accomplishment for our Romulus team,” said Marathon Petroleum Romulus Terminal Operations Supervisor Nick Wright. “This recognition is the result of employees and leadership working together every day to identify hazards, strengthen our safety practices and ensure everyone goes home safely. We appreciate MIOSHA’s partnership and are proud to be part of a program that recognizes excellence in workplace safety and health.”
About MVPP
MIOSHA established the Michigan Voluntary Protection Program in 1996 to recognize employers with exemplary safety and health management systems that exceed MIOSHA requirements. The program is open to qualifying Michigan employers with injury and illness rates below the industry average for the past three years.
To earn MVPP STAR status, employers undergo a rigorous evaluation process that includes a comprehensive program review, onsite assessments and employee interviews to verify that safety and health systems are effective and fully integrated into daily operations.
