LANSING, Michigan – Today, Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) Director Tim Boring was in western Michigan to celebrate Agritourism Month and honor agritourism's economic and social benefits to our state's farms and communities. Director Boring toured Swiss Lane Farms, Schwallier’s Country Basket, and Farm Haus Cider Co.
Earlier this month, Governor Gretchen Whitmer proclaimed October as Agritourism Month in Michigan to celebrate and honor agritourism's economic and social benefits to our state's farms and communities. Autumn trips to farms, wineries, farm markets, cider mills, and other agritourism businesses offer an excellent opportunity to enjoy all Michigan offers while supporting family farms, small businesses, and rural communities across Michigan.
“Agritourism opportunities are available in every county in Michigan, providing loads of family friendly fun. There’s nothing like visiting a farm to pick fresh, crisp apples or take a hayride out to the pumpkin patch to find that perfect pumpkin,” said Director Boring. “Governor Whitmer’s ‘Make it in Michigan’ budget supports our local farmers and producers as they continue to diversify and explore new opportunities.”
Swiss Lane Farms is a centennial farm based off core values around their family and religion. Swiss Lane finds success through innovative farming techniques, a positive and knowledgeable work environment, with hard working, cow loving people. Their mission is to continue to grow in the dairy business.
Schwallier’s Country Basket is a family-owned that opened in 1989, in the heart of West Michigan’s apple capital. Their store originally started as a roadside produce stand and it has evolved into a thriving farm market complete with giant corn maze, petting farm, pumpkin patch, cow train and wagon rides, and other attractions.
Farmhaus Cider Co. is known for producing a wide variety of ciders, all made on location, on a 150-year-old family farm that was restored. Farmhaus Cider is run in Michigan with a thirst for change. The owners believe in embracing challenges, breaking the rules, and proving they can do things their way.
Throughout 2023, MDARD will meet with Michigan's food and agricultural businesses to discuss how they can continue to succeed and how the department can best assist their continuous growth and expansion.
