Established Dairy Farms

Important information for Established Dairy Farms in accordance with the Grade "A" Milk Law of 2001

  • One of the primary concerns of the law is with antibiotic contamination of milk. Information on this may be found in manual DY-323
  • Milk from farm bulk tanks must be picked up within 72 hours. Tanks must be emptied at each pickup unless: the tank is emptied later and before the next milking or the bulk tank has a temperature recording chart. In all cases, bulk tanks must be washed once each 72 hours of use.
  • If an established licensed dairy farm wishes to make changes to its milking system, it should consult the Equipment Installation Manual for requirements. (This manual is primarily a table of contents with links to other documents found within).

  • Manual DY-348 provides information behind the setup of a new dairy farm to the owner of an established dairy farm for review. This would be helpful in implementing changes on the established farm.
  • If an established farm makes any changes to a well or water system, that farm must notify your MDARD inspector or contact the Lansing Office at 800-292-3939 and your local health department for a review of the planned changes and information on who to contact for approval of new well sites.
  • Producers interested in direct loading of milk should consider how their milk will be sampled before shipment. There are a variety of sampling methods, but all samples must be taken by a licensed sampler.
