The Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity supports eligible workers and employers through the National Farmworker Jobs Program's Career Services and Training and Housing Assistance Grants.
We empower farmworkers with training and career services that help workers secure stable, year-round employment; boost economic mobility by creating pathways to self-sufficiency through education, skills development and job placement; and reduce barriers through supportive services like housing assistance, transportation or childcare.
The National Farmworker Jobs Program (NFJP) is a U.S. Department of Labor-administered workforce investment program for eligible migrant and seasonal farmworkers established under the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act Section 167 and is a required partner of Michigan's workforce development delivery system.
Career and employment services include skills assessment, labor market information, job search assistance, customer-centered career planning, individual and group career counseling, internships and work experiences, and financial literacy training.
Training services include occupational skills and job training, including on-the-job training and opportunities to upgrade skills that prepare participants for work in growing and in-demand industries, meet the hiring needs of local employers, and provide participants with an industry-recognized credential.
Education services include tuition assistance, application support, and support services that help participants work towards a post-secondary degree, including an associate’s or bachelor’s degree.
Youth services include tutoring, solutions to increase graduation rates, occupational skills training, services to help further education, leadership development opportunities, mentoring, comprehensive guidance and counseling, financial literacy training, and entrepreneurial skill training.
Supportive assistance services include short-term direct assistance to help participants overcome barriers to employment or training, including transportation, childcare, or English as a second language (ESL) classes, among others. Related Assistance assists eligible agricultural workers in retaining or stabilizing their agricultural employment.
Housing services support better economic outcomes for farmworkers and meet a critical need for the availability of safe and sanitary farmworker housing in select Michigan counties.
Permanent housing services support individuals and families in their permanent residence and may include rental or utility assistance, mortgage assistance, or security deposits or application fees.
Temporary housing supports individuals and families whose employment requires occasional travel outside their normal commuting area and may consist of emergency housing payments, including hotel/motel stays or short-term rent/lease and utilities.
Housing counseling services include education classes and individual counseling, fair housing violations awareness, financial wellness, and disaster preparedness and recovery.
