Secretary of State
Secretary of State offices have reopened. To protect staff and public health, offices will only provide services by appointment, and only offer critical services that cannot be completed online, by mail or at a self-service station. Advance appointments become available six months ahead of time. Same-day appointments become available 24 hours before appointment time. Many transactions can be completed from home by mail or using online services. Vehicle registration tabs can be printed immediately at any of our self-service stations.
**NOTE: Gov. Whitmer signed legislation that temporarily extends the expirations of all Michigan driver’s licenses, state IDs and vehicle registrations through September 30. The Governor previously issued an order that extends watercraft registrations through July 31.
**NOTE: We continue to work through a backlog of transactions submitted by mail during and since our offices were closed. We ask for your patience and understanding if you experience a delay as we continue to catch up to date.
In the Department of State License Plate Store, you'll find a showcase of attractive license plates that should please just about anyone.
"Plate It Your Way" is an online service that allows you to check for the availability of a personalized plate before you visit a branch office.
The License Plate Store also provides information about disability plates and parking placards as well as historical and collector plates.
The International Registration Plan (IRP) is a program for licensing commercial vehicles in interstate operations among member jurisdictions. All of North America is included in the IRP, except for Alaska, Hawaii, Mexico and the Canadian Northwest Territories and Nunavut.
