Only the vehicle owner may request a duplicate title.
To order a duplicate title online, you will need:
- Your driver’s license or ID
- Your date of birth
- A debit or credit card or bank account number for payment
To place your order:
- Visit Online Services.
- Locate the Vehicle Transactions section and select the link to “Request a Duplicate Title.”
- Create or log into your Secretary of State online account.
- Follow the screen prompts to complete your transaction.
- Your duplicate title should arrive in the mail in 14 days.
Only available to Michigan residents who are out of state and former Michigan residents who have lost their Michigan title. Only the vehicle owner may request a duplicate title.
To order a duplicate title by mail or fax, you will need a:
- Duplicate Title Application
- Termination statement from lending institution if removing a secured interest
- Name and address of lending institution if adding a secured interest
- Check or money order (mail requests)
- A debit or credit card or bank account number for payment (fax requests)
To apply by mail:
- Complete a Duplicate Title Application and sign the application. (Adobe software signatures are not accepted).
- Mail the signed application, other supporting documents if applicable, with check or money order payable to “State of Michigan” to:

This transaction is not available at self-service stations.

To order a duplicate title at an office visit, you will need:
- Your driver’s license or ID
- The vehicle identification number (VIN)
- A debit or credit card or bank account number for payment
- Appointment of Agent form if you cannot appear. You may appoint an agent to sign on your behalf. For vehicles with joint ownership, only one of the owners must appear. An appointment of agent is not necessary for the co-owner.
To order:
- Visit any Secretary of State office.
- Sign the title application and present your identification.
- Pay the duplicate title fee of $15. The cost will be $20 for a same-day title.
- Your duplicate title will arrive in the mail in 14 days.

How much does it cost to purchase a duplicate title?
The duplicate title fee is $15. There is an extra $5 fee for same-day instant title service.

Who can request a duplicate title?
A duplicate title is issued when the original title is lost, stolen, or damaged. Any owner shown on the title may apply for a duplicate title.
When a vehicle is under joint ownership, only one owner or their representative needs to sign the duplicate title application. An Appointment of Agent form from the other co-owners isn’t necessary.
Vehicle owners trading in their vehicle at a dealership may have the dealer apply for a duplicate title. The dealer will need to submit a copy of their dealer license and telephone number. If you complete an Appointment of Agent form appointing the dealer as your agent to sign on your behalf, the dealer must provide a photocopy of your driver’s license or state ID.
Members of the military and other Michigan residents who are residing out of state may request a duplicate title through the mail by submitting an Out-of-State Resident Duplicate Title Application. Contact the department’s Special Services Branch at 517-636-5872 for assistance. -
How long will it take to receive my duplicate title?
Your duplicate title should arrive in the mail in 14 days.
If you need your title sooner, instant, or same day, title service is available at all Secretary of State offices. The vehicle owner must appear in person for instant title service. You cannot appoint an agent to represent you for an instant title transaction.
