If you're eligible to renew your license or ID online, you will need:
- Your license/ID number
- The last four digits of your Social Security number
- Payment with credit or debit card (additional fees apply) or e-check/bank account number
If you're eligible to renew your license or ID by mail, you will need:
- Your renewal notice
- The return envelope (included with your renewal notice)
- Check/money order payable to the State of Michigan

If you're eligible to renew your license or ID at a self-service station, you will need:
- Your license/ID or your renewal notice
- The last four digits of your Social Security number
- Payment with credit or debit card (additional fees apply) or cash (at select locations)
A $3.95 service fee will be charged for each item transacted at a station.

In most cases, you only need to visit an office every 12 years to take a photo as part of renewing your license or ID.
If you can’t renew your license or ID online, by mail or at a self-service station, and are required to visit a Secretary of State office, you will need:
- Your license/ID
- Payment with cash, check, money order, or credit or debit card (additional fees apply).
You will be required to take a vision test and a new photo during your visit.

It's likely because we need to verify your personal information or take a new photo of you at a Secretary of State office.

How much will it cost to renew my license or ID?
Standard license renewal - $18

Can I drive if my license expires on a weekend or holiday?
The expiration date of your license is extended to include the next business day if your license expires on a Saturday, Sunday or legal holiday.

Do I have to apply for a REAL ID-compliant license or ID when I renew?
No. Michigan will continue to issue standard licenses and IDs that aren't REAL ID-compliant. However, as of May 7, 2025, if you plan to fly domestically or enter certain federal facilities, military bases and nuclear power plants, you will need to bring documentation that meets the REAL ID requirements.

I lost or damaged my renewal mailer. Can I still renew my license or ID by mail?
Yes.
You will need to send a letter before your license or ID expires with the following information:- Your first, middle and last name
- Your license/ID number
- Your permanent address and alternative mailing address, if applicable
- Your phone number
- A check or money order payable to the State of Michigan. Determine how much you owe for your renewal.

You can replace a lost, damaged or stolen license or ID online, at a self-service station, by mail or by visiting an office.

Can I get an extension if I am out of state when my license or ID expires?

A license may be renewed online if you didn't renew it through alternative methods, such as by mail, online or at a self-service station, the last two renewals.Out of state - by mail
If you will be returning to Michigan soon, a license extension that is valid for 180 days after the date your license expires can be mailed. All that is needed is your complete name, date of birth, license number, Social Security number, and out-of-state address. If you are renewing a standard license, and are ineligible for a Social Security number, you must provide a letter of ineligibility from the Social Security Administration and proof of legal presence. You must have a valid Social Security number to renew an enhanced license. All Social Security information will be verified.
If you aren't going to be back in Michigan within 180 days of the license expiration, information to renew your driver's license by mail, if eligible, will be sent to you.
