Michigan’s AmeriCorps members have remained engaged in service, contributing to a variety of COVID-19 relief efforts. Examples include:
- Faith in Youth (Good Samaritan Ministries): Members are helping to prepare and deliver meals as part of the Meet Up and Eat Up program for youth.
- AmeriCorps Community Training for Overdose Rescue (Wayne State University): Members are providing assistance with intake and other essential duties at drive-thru COVID-19 testing sites, donating blood for relief efforts, and providing emergency food distribution.
- AmeriCorps Urban Safety Corps (Wayne State University): Members are connecting local residents to available resources such as food, health care, and other basic needs items, as well as delivering basic needs items such as toiletries and cleaning supplies to members of the community.
- Cherry Health AmeriCorps (Cherry Health): Members are making masks for healthcare workers and distributing food at schools for kids and families.
- Flint Community School Corps (Crim Fitness Foundation): Members are preparing and distributing meals to students and families in collaboration with Flint Community School District.
- Flint Urban Safety Corps (United Way of Genesee County): Members are supporting preparation and distribution of food in collaboration with the local food banks and pantries, as well as providing support with resource distribution at local COVID-19 help centers.
- FoodCorps Michigan (FoodCorps): Members are supporting preparation and distribution of meals to students and families with Detroit Public Schools Community District and assisting the district in setting up 50 distribution sites across the Detroit area. Members are distributing food with a mobile Gleaners Food Bank unit to residents homes.
- STEMCorps (United Way of Saginaw County): Members are supporting resource distribution in collaboration with 211, as well as preparing and distributing meals to students in the Saginaw Community Schools.
- Ingham Co. Health Dept. AmeriCorps Program (Ingham Co. Health Dept.): Members are serving in the Greater Lansing Food Bank food distribution warehouse packing up pantry food orders for 7 mid-Michigan counties and gleaning food from local restaurants that are temporarily closing or have severely reduced hours.
- Together We Prepare (American Red Cross Michigan Region): Members are helping to address the increased need for blood (scheduling volunteers to assist with blood drives, donating blood themselves, and screening blood donors); training and onboarding new and current volunteers; partnering with local food banks to pack food for deliveries; assisting with virtual casework for national disasters, like the Kentucky floods and the Nashville tornados; responding to the increased number of home fires through Disaster Action Teams and assisting with casework follow-up; preparing disaster and shelter kits for the influx of community members needing the assistance; updating regional shelter locations to set up potential shelters; and delivering resources like cots and face masks to areas in need.
- 4-H STEAM Corps (Michigan State University Extension): Members are helping to organize distribution of COVID-19 relief supplies.
- Family Literacy Program (Literacy Center of West Michigan): Members continue to support learners who are isolated at home, as well as supporting relief efforts at blood donation center
- Michigan Education Corps (Hope Network):Members continue to serve their students while everyone stays home! In addition to finding creative ways to support students, members are providing emergency food distribution, supporting blood donation and healthcare centers, helping isolated individuals with basic needs, and more.
- ?Safe Routes to Health (Michigan Fitness Foundation): Members are organizing emergency food distribution in their communities and sharing resources to keep families healthy and active while staying home!
- Flint Recovery Corps (United Way of Genesee County): Members were providing resources and food for Flint residents even before COVID-19, so they were ready to continue serving their community by organizing, packaging, delivering and growing food. FRC is supporting food banks and pantries, as well as Hurley Hospital’s Food Farmacy to keep residents healthy and aware of the resources available in Flint during the Covid-19 pandemic,?
- ?Superior AmeriCorps (BHK Child Development Board): Members are staying connected with students while schools are closed by sending home free books to keep everyone reading
- Muskegon Urban Safety Corps (Muskegon County Land Bank): Members are serving their community during the COVID-19 outbreak by assembling and delivering food and hygiene kits and distributing COVID-19 safety information throughout the community.
