As a result, food and/or monetary donation drives will be held across the state of Michigan on Friday, September 10 and Saturday, September 11. The "Tackle Hunger" effort, which consists of activities that strive to address hunger, coincides with Hunger Action Month. According to the Food Bank Council of Michigan, more than 1.1 million people in the state use the Michigan food bank network annually. Individuals are encouraged to discover if a "Tackle Hunger" event is occurring in their community.
"We hope ‘Tackle Hunger' events will raise awareness about a critical issue affecting communities across the state and how individuals can volunteer to address such issues," said Paula Kaiser VanDam, Executive Director of the Michigan Community Service Commission. "We also hope that through this effort, and the efforts of others across the state as part of the National Day of Service and Remembrance, Michiganders will be inspired to serve the whole year through."
In addition to the "Tackle Hunger" events located across Michigan, many communities and organizations are coordinating service projects to honor September 11. They include:
The U.P. Volunteer Network will conduct a food drive September 6 through September 11 to assist the Feeding America West Michigan Food Bank and the Salvation Army of Marquette Food Bank. ·
The Acts of Kindness (A-OK) Detroit: A Weekend of Remembrance & Renewal event will bring together several organizations from across the metro-Detroit area on September 11 to engage volunteers of all different ages, faiths, ethnic backgrounds, and races for a variety of clean-up projects at parks throughout the city. ·
The Grand Rapids National Day of Service Project will unite AmeriCorps members and community members at Martin Luther King, Jr. Park on September 11 to clean and restore the park. A lunch featuring guest speakers talking about the importance of celebrating community, diversity, and service will also occur. ·
The September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance is the culmination of an effort originally launched in 2002 by 9/11 family members and support groups, led by the organization MyGoodDeed , who worked to establish the service day as a way to honor those who died and to rekindle the spirit of unity and compassion that followed the attacks. September 11 was officially recognized as a National Day of Service and Remembrance following the passage of the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act in April 2009.
