First-Ever Disability/Inclusion Week Scheduled for October 4 thru 8, 2010
(517) 241-0063
The Michigan Community Service Commission (MCSC) has announced a week-long effort to encourage national service, mentoring, and volunteer programs in the state to be more inclusive. The first-ever Disability/Inclusion Week is scheduled for October 4 through October 8, 2010.
The MCSC is committed to encouraging all Michigan residents to engage in service. The organization's vision is a state where all residents meet community needs and find personal fulfillment through service and volunteerism. Of Michigan's 10 million residents, about 1.9 million have a disability. That's one in every five residents. October is also National Disability Employment Awareness Month.
This week-long effort will raise awareness about disability and inclusion while engaging programs and organizations in the various efforts of the MCSC. Valuable tools and resources will also be made available to help link and enhance service opportunities with individuals with disabilities. This information will include: the recruitment of individuals with disabilities to serve, creating an inclusive service environment, coordinating service projects, and much more.
"The 2010 Disability/Inclusion Week is part of a concentrated effort to raise awareness about the value of engaging individuals with disabilities in service," explained Paula Kaiser VanDam, Executive Director of the Michigan Community Service Commission. "For individuals with disabilities, the chance to go out into the community and serve others can change perspectives - their own and those of others. We encourage organizations and volunteers to join us during this informative week."
