MRS provides older customer support to get more training
December 23, 2024
Michigan Rehabilitation Services (MRS) began working with Kari while she was working as a nursing assistant at a residential care facility and attending Kellogg Community College to become a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). She had obtained a Frontliner Scholarship, so she was not asking for much financial support from MRS for school, just some support for extra class and lab fees.
The most important service MRS provided Kari was vocational guidance. Kari regularly checked in with Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor to talk through challenges and get encouragement to keep going.
Ultimately, that’s the main thing Kari needed – someone to talk to.
What made Kari’s case so special is she was doing all this at 60 years of age! While Kari wanted to earn more, that was not her main motivation. Her twin daughters were also working as Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) and she wanted to show them that if she could do it, they could, too.
And after Kari enrolled in her program, they did as well.
After two years of working and attending school, Kari graduated from her program. She was extremely proud of her accomplishments and the fact that her daughters would be attending her graduation ceremony.
