Employers can get answers from UIA website's new AI-powered chatbot

There’s a new resource for employers who have questions about unemployment insurance.

The Michigan Unemployment Insurance Agency’s (UIA) website now features an AI-powered chatbot that provides quick and accurate information about taxes and employer programs.

The chatbot can be accessed 24 hours a day by clicking on the speech bubble in the lower right corner of Michigan.gov/UIA webpages viewed on either a desktop or mobile device. It quickly searches the website and related resources to find the best answer. Responses include links to source material so users can dig deeper into the topic.

Chatbot responses can be rated using the thumbs up or thumbs down buttons. Users can also leave a comment in a dialogue box. Feedback will help UIA refine question results as well as identify employer-focused content changes for the agency’s website.

The chatbot answers general questions about unemployment. Please don’t share personal identifying information such as an employer account number or contact information.

Learn more about the new chatbot by watching this video or go to Michigan.gov/Chatbot.

Please respond to request about status of workers in WorkShare program

A photo of a person operating a forklift. Text at the bottom of the graphic reads, "Bring Works Back from Unemployment. Unemployment Insurance Agency WorkShare."

Michigan Unemployment Insurance Agency (UIA) is asking employers paid workers under the federal Work Share Program to confirm how their employees were classified.

Check your Michigan Web Account Manager (MiWAM) account for a Self-Attestation Web Request if you had intermittent, temporary, or seasonal employees participating in the program from April 2020 through September 2021. The request can be found under Tax Account Alerts.

What information is needed

Employee count

  • Identify how many employees were classified as intermittent, temporary, or seasonal.
  • Include the classification for each employee.

Check the appropriate box for each worker

  • Intermittent
  • Temporary
  • Seasonal
  • If none apply, leave it blank.

Verify that the information is correct

  • Double-check all information before submitting.
  • Once submitted, it cannot be changed.

Keep these tips in mind

  • Responses are purely informational; results won't affect you or your employees.
  • No overpayments will be established.
  • No reimbursements will be required.
  • Request for information is in response to an audit by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Inspector General and Employment and Training Administration.
  • UIA must ensure benefits paid under the Work Share Program are charged to the correct funding source.
  • Respond in MiWAM as soon as possible (unless you already have).

There is still time to sign up for the September Employer Seminar online!

Upcoming Seminars: Sept. 17 | Nov. 19

A QR Code. Text above the code reads, "Michigan Unemployment Insurance Agency's 2025 Employer Seminars"

Scan the QR Code above or go to the Employer Homepage at Michigan.gov/UIA for a link to sign up for an upcoming seminar.

The UIA's Tax and Employer Services Division provides these seminars to explain what employers and third-party administrators need to know about participating in the unemployment insurance program in Michigan.

How to manage your MiWAM account access to keep your information secure

Account security is of the utmost importance to the Michigan Unemployment Insurance Agency (UIA).

To protect an employer’s Michigan Web Account Manager (MiWAM) account, designate a master user internal to your business. (Please do not assign or associate your third-party administrator’s (TPA) information to this master role.).

If there is a change in the master user, have a listed officer of the business submit a signed statement on company letterhead indicating the change.

Be sure to include the name, email address, and title of the new master user. Send your letter to MiWAMSupport@Michigan.gov for assistance with your MiWAM account.

Below are steps on how a master user can add, modify, or deactivate additional internal users in MiWAM.

Keep up with latest MiUI system news

UIA is transitioning to a new, modern computer system for employers, third-party administrators (TPAs), and claimants. It’s called MiUI and the tax phase will be live on Monday, Dec. 15, 2025. The benefits phase will launch in summer 2026.

MiUI is designed with the customer in mind. It will ease wage and tax report submission, speed claims filing, and build on UIA’s robust anti-fraud measures.

This rollout will include many changes, and we want to help you to be informed for a successful and smooth transition.

Please familiarize yourself with these helpful resources during the Countdown to MiUI:

Employer Checklist: This informational month-by-month guide will help you track which actions need to be taken, and when, between now and Go Live in December.

MiUI Minute Email Series: Each edition provides quick updates, learnings, and/or actionable steps on the transition. The MiUI Minute is sent to all subscribers to the Employer Advisor newsletter and all editions are posted to the MiUI University website. Sign up for the MiUI Minute.

Claims filed from January to April reviewed for new benefit rate eligibility

As part of the changes to state law that took effect in April, the Michigan Unemployment Insurance Agency (UIA) conducted a thorough review of active jobless claims to determine whether weekly benefit rates would change for some claimants.

New claims filed between Jan. 1, 2025, and April 2, 2025, when increased weekly unemployment benefit rates went into effect, were reviewed and nearly 48,000 Michiganders qualified for retroactive payments totaling $34 million.

UIA provided employers with a Monetary Redetermination letter detailing the change to a former employee’s benefits. The letter also explained any change to charges on the employer’s account.

Employers have the right to appeal the Monetary Redetermination and changes to charges. The appeal must be filed within 30 days from the mail date of the Monetary Redetermination Letter for it to be considered on time. If it’s late, the employer must show good cause for the late appeal request.

The changes to unemployment law did not guarantee an adjustment in a claimant’s benefits.

Also part of the changes in the law was an increase in the number of weeks someone could qualify for benefits, from 20 to 26. However, the new 26 weeks maximum only applied to new claims filed on April 2 or after.
