UIA ends pause on collecting benefits overpayments: What you need to know
The Michigan Unemployment Insurance Agency (UIA) has resumed collecting overpayments on claims filed between March 1, 2020, and July 24, 2025. Under the court-approved initiative, employers may receive a benefit charge credit or credits that affect a prior tax rate year.
Employers can request the adjustment be applied to the rate year in which the benefit charges originated.
For a request to be timely, a written request must be submitted within 30 days of the mail date of the Weekly Statement of Benefit Charges an employer receives.
Submit the request to UIA using one of the following methods:
Online: Log into your Michigan Web Account Manager (MIWAM) account. Select UI Tax. Under the Account Services tab, look under Tax Issues and Assessments and click on Submit a Tax Protest or Appeal. Click on Add Tax Protest/Appeal, then select the Rate Protest/Appeal tab to submit the request.
Mail: Send Form 1471T and your written request to:
Unemployment Insurance Agency
P.O. Box 8068
Royal Oak, MI 48068-8068
Fax: Send Form 1471T and your written request to (517) 636-0014
Employers can direct their questions to the Office of Employer Ombudsman (OEO) at 1-855-484-2536, Option 4 (TTY customers can call 1-866-366-0004.)

Seeking work waiver option available for workers facing temporary layoff
A seeking work wavier allows employees who qualify for unemployment benefits to forego the requirement of searching for new employment while they wait to return to their current jobs.
Employers must file the waiver request with the Michigan Unemployment Insurance Agency (UIA) at least a week before the last day that employees work.

Employee claim information can affect employer tax rates for upcoming year
There are several factors that can affect employer tax rates for the upcoming year, and the Michigan Unemployment Insurance Agency (UIA) wants to ensure its customers are set up for success.
When former employees file unemployment claims, the UIA provides the employer with a Monetary Determination letter.
The letter is sent by mail and posted to the employer’s Michigan Web Account Manager (MiWAM) account.
The monetary determination contains information about the employee, the reason for separation, dates of employment, and more.
An employer’s response to this notice is optional and depends on whether they wish to protest the claim. If you do not agree with the claim, this is the time to provide UIA with information that could support your position. A response is required within 10 days.
UIA will also send a Request for Information. Response to this request is mandatory, however it does not mean the claim is being protested. Failure to respond to this request will affect an employer’s responsiveness rating and can result in an increase in the tax rate for the following year.
