Helping veterans find purpose after service: Pat Muoio and the power of VES
November 10, 2025
For thousands of Michiganders, Veterans’ Employment Services (VES) is a lifeline. Housed within the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO), VES is committed to helping veterans and their families transition successfully into civilian careers. Through personalized support, employer advocacy and one-on-one guidance, VES empowers those who served to build the future they deserve. No one knows that better than Pat Muoio.
At just 17 years old, Pat enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. With no long-term plan, but a deep desire to serve, he stepped into a world that would shape his future. Over the next 23 years, Pat built a distinguished military career, including 15 years as a recruiter. He learned what it meant to lead with integrity, adapt in high-stakes environments and commit fully to a mission.
After retiring from the military, Pat began a new kind of service: helping fellow veterans navigate the same transition he once faced. Today, he serves as a Local Veterans’ Employment Representative in Northern Michigan, connecting former service members with the resources and training they need to secure civilian career opportunities.
“It’s the most fulfilling work I’ve ever done, because I know how hard that transition can be,” said Pat. “The military opened so many doors for me. Now, I get to help others find that same sense of purpose and opportunity.”
What makes Veterans’ Employment Services so impactful is its veterans-helping-veterans approach. Every participant is paired with a specialist, someone who’s worn the uniform and understands the challenges of reintegration. Together, they build an Individual Employment Plan that reflects each veteran’s goals, strengths and circumstances. VES staff assist with resumes, interview prep, job placement, training referrals and follow-up services. They also work closely with employers to ensure veterans, and their spouses, receive priority of service and access to quality job opportunities.
In 2024, VES helped more than 6,000 Michigan veterans and military spouses access employment services and career guidance. That number represents LEO’s ongoing commitment to turning service into opportunity. Veterans like Pat are at the heart of that mission, walking alongside others to open doors, restore confidence and build futures rooted in purpose and stability.
