The Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO) provided $15 million in funding, through the MI Impact Grant program, to support the critical work of ten nonprofits to provide meaningful and sustained relief in the communities they serve and provide a lasting impact.

GHP takes a proactive approach to health care by providing preventive health care coverage for services including doctor visits, cancer screenings, prescription drugs, outpatient mental health services and more. The nonprofit focuses on serving ethnic and minority populations, seniors, those with disabilities, formerly incarcerated individuals re-entering the community and the uninsured and under insured. With the MI Impact Grant, GHP will focus on the expansion of Community Health Workers who will allow them to be mobile and embedded in the community to assist with enrolling Genesee County residents in Medicaid and other state assistance programs and troubleshoot denials and other barriers. |

GLFB has led mid-Michigan’s fight against hunger to ensure families and neighbors in need have access to the nutritious food to support their health and well-being. GLFB’s seven-county service area encompasses Clare, Clinton, Eaton, Gratiot, Ingham, Isabella and Shiawassee Counties. Thanks to the MI Impact Grant, the Food Bank will expand its focus with an equity lens on rural communities where residents face unique challenges that make affording food more difficult, including lack of public transportation, low-wage jobs and underemployment. |

Holy Cross Services |
Statewide with a focus on youth in foster care Saginaw, Bay, Midland and surrounding area. |
Holy Cross Services provides healthcare services, case management, access to basic needs and mental health counseling to youth across the state, primarily in mid-Michigan. With the MI Impact Grant, the nonprofit will expand their programs to support teens and young adults ages 14-26 in transition from the child welfare system or foster care. Specific services will be available at their Compass Center, including case management, resume building, pre-interview preparation, driver’s license guidance, budgeting, access to community health care providers, understanding of community resources, access to laundry and hygiene items. |

Kalamazoo Defender provides resources for housing, mental health, general health, disabilities, addiction, literacy, life skills, job training, civil legal services, job placement and peer-based support for those going through the criminal justice system. The nonprofit will use the $1.3 million MI Impact Grant to address and document issues of mental health among their service population. The grant will also enable the nonprofit to build internal expertise to significantly expand therapeutic support for those clients, gather reliable data on the prevalence and nature of that population's mental health challenges and coordinate with local experts to fashion healthier systemic approaches within and beyond the criminal justice system. |

Their program incorporates social workers to assigned legal cases to help clients with benefits applications and connect them to food, transportation, health, housing and employment services. |

The nonprofit currently provides employment and training services to 1,100 adults annually. The MI Impact Grant will allow the nonprofit to support 200 newcomers with a goal of building a skilled workforce through Integrated Education and Training (IET) programs that combine English language instruction and technical training. The Healthcare Talent for the Future program primarily trains participants to become a certified nursing assistant (CNA), pharmacy technician, phlebotomist and offers medical coding. Each participant is eligible for childcare and will receive a full-time salary during training at Corewell – once they receive a credential, participants are eligible for higher paying opportunities. |

NEMCSA provides programs that aid low-income and otherwise disadvantaged individuals of all ages in northeast Michigan. With the MI Impact Grant, NEMCSA will expand its services and have mentors assist those in need with housing, utility, transportation and job training services. Their Bridges of Self-Sufficiency (BOSS) Program is a mentor-guided program that provides intensive and personalized case management to participants who are experiencing poverty, with a focus on multi-generational poverty. |

Superior Watershed Partnership provides electric, heat, water and waste services to 1,000 Michiganders across 15 counties in the Upper Peninsula. The agency also offers self-sufficiency services including needs assessments, energy security plans, energy and financial education workshops and an energy action plan for clients requiring more than $2,500 in energy assistance. With the MI Impact Grant, Superior Watershed Partnership will expand their services to those above the 150% federal poverty level and can now offer water and waste utility payments to those in need. |
