Certificate of Origin

A Certificate of Origin (CO) is required by some countries for all or only certain products. The exporter should verify whether a CO is required with the buyer or a freight forwarder. Exporters can obtain a Certificate of Origin through:

Special certificates may be required for countries with which the United States has a free trade agreement (FTA). For details and instructions for each country that the U.S. has an FTA with, visit the International Trade Administration.

North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) Certificate of Origin

In order to utilize the duty-free benefits of exporting eligible U.S. products to Canada or Mexico, exporters must provide a NAFTA certificate of origin to ensure that the product(s) comply with NAFTA's rules of origin. The certificate certifies that the exporter understands the rules origin pertaining to the product being shipped and that the product complies with those rules.
