FDA Retail Program Standards

FDA Retail Program Standards offer a voluntary framework to help Michigan local health departments strengthen their Food Service Programs through ongoing quality improvement. It includes a self-assessment cycle followed by an auditor led verification, for reinforcing best practices and targeting foodborne illness risk reduction. These standards complement, not replace, Michigan Food Service Accreditation Requirements.

Verification Audit:

  • A systematic, independent examination by an external party (auditor) to confirm the accuracy of the self-assessment conducted by a jurisdiction that is enrolled in the Retail Program Standards.
  • An auditor is any authorized city, county, district, state, federal, tribal, or other third-party person who has no responsibilities for the day-to-day operations of that jurisdiction and is charged with conducting a verification audit, which confirms the accuracy of the self-assessment.
  • A Michigan jurisdiction enrolled in the Retail Program Standards may request a verification audit from the Local Health Services Specialist who oversees Accreditation and Voluntary Retail Standards. View specialist map for Accreditation and Voluntary Retail Standards.
