Can non-academic organizations receive grant funds?Yes, non-academic organizations can receive funding as long as the lead principal investigator (PI) is affiliated with a university or college, including community and Tribal colleges.
-
Does the lead PI have to be from a Michigan institution of higher education? While the lead PI and other PIs can be based outside Michigan, at least one project team member must be affiliated with a Michigan university or college. In addition, the lead PI must be affiliated with a university or college, but other PIs can be from academic institutions, non-governmental organizations, consulting firms, Tribal agencies, or other relevant organizations. Interested applicants who are unsure of their eligibility based on project location or team composition are encouraged to submit a Letter of Intent describing their circumstances for consideration by the grant team.

Does the project have to take place on a Michigan farm?Ideally, projects with field research components will be carried out in Michigan. However, if the proposal sufficiently demonstrates the project’s relevance to Michigan agriculture based on soil type, climatic conditions, hydrology, and/or crop(s) being grown, then out-of-state projects may be allowable. Projects that focus on laboratory or greenhouse studies should emphasize a strong relevance to agriculture in Michigan.
