Secretary Benson statement on Court of Claims dismissal of lawsuit that threatened voting rights of Michigan's military and overseas citizens
April 22, 2026
Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson issued this statement today on the Michigan Court of Claims ruling to dismiss with prejudice a Republican National Committee (RNC)/Michigan GOP lawsuit attempting to invalidate the voting rights of Michigan’s military and overseas citizen voters:
“Today’s court decision is a victory for military service members, their families, and the rule of law; it’s a defeat for this disgraceful, coordinated attack against eligible Michigan voters and our secure election process.
“Every U.S. citizen has the Constitutional right to freely vote in every election – and we should all share a basic, nonpartisan commitment to making that right real for every American citizen.
“I hope the court’s dismissal of this case marks the end of the RNC’s misguided and unlawful interference into our work to ensure all citizens can cast their ballots freely, fairly, and securely. Either way, Michigan is prepared to continue to defend the voting rights of every eligible citizen in our state and across the nation.”
