The mission of the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA) is to help protect the safety and health of Michigan workers.

MIOSHA Divisions and Sections

  • Consultation Education and Training Division

    The Consultation Education and Training (CET) Division offers free statewide safety and health assistance to employers and employees.

  • General Industry Safety and Health Division

    The General Industry Safety and Health Division (GISHD) conducts inspections and investigations in places of employment within the state of Michigan, including public sector and private employers.

  • Construction Safety and Health Division

    The Construction Safety and Health Division (CSHD) enforces safety and health standards in the construction industry.

  • Appeals Division

    The Appeals Division represents the General Industry Safety and Health and the Construction Safety and Health Divisions in prehearing conferences and formal administrative hearings related to contested MIOSHA citations.

  • Employee Discrimination Section

    The Employee Discrimination Section (EDS) provides protection through investigations of complaints by workers who have been allegedly discriminated against for exercising rights under the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Act.

  • Radiation Safety Section

    The Radiation Safety Section (RSS) is housed within TSD and regulates radiation machines by registering and inspecting facilities utilizing radiation machines.

  • Asbestos Program

    The Asbestos Program, housed within the CSHD, assures that people working with asbestos are properly trained and the individuals performing asbestos removal comply with rules governing the work activity.

  • Technical Services Division

    The Technical Services Division (TSD) is responsible for a variety of services to MIOSHA staff and clients, including preparing and administering grants and contracts related to the federal programs that MIOSHA supports, and monitoring budget activity.

Mission and History

Image of Barton G. Pickelman, CIH, Acting MIOSHA Director Bart Pickelman was appointed Director of MIOSHA on October 5, 2016. Bart began his MIOSHA career as a compliance officer and also served as ergonomic specialist, safety and health manager, and MIOSHA deputy director.

As Director, he oversees all aspects of the MIOSHA program, which includes occupational safety and health compliance in general industry and construction, and the outreach activities of the Consultation Education and Training Division. The MIOSHA program also includes the Radiation Safety Section that is responsible for the registration of over 29,000 x-ray machines.

Mr. Pickelman is a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) with over 35 years of experience in occupational safety and health in both the private and public sectors. Bart has demonstrated strong leadership through his administration of the MIOSHA program and its more than 200 employees. Bart has a true passion for the MIOSHA mission of helping protect the safety and health of Michigan workers.
 
The Board of Health and Safety Compliance and Appeals reviews all contested Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA) cases involving safety and health citations, orders, and appeals. The board may order testimony at hearings, compel witnesses or require depositions, and further promulgates rules of procedure for hearings, maintaining consistency with any federal occupation safety or health standard.
