About the challenge

MiVoice MiVote is a new initiative for k-12 schools run by the Michigan Center for Civic Education in partnership with the Michigan Department of State and Michigan Department of Education

The MiVoice MiVote program includes:

  • A statewide high school voter registration challenge: A high school voter registration, preregistration, and poll worker recruitment challenge awarding schools with outstanding enrollment and registration rates.
  • Resources and lesson plans: Civic education and engagement resources for k-12 educators to teach and engage students of all ages.
  • Connecting with local resources: Through this program, you can connect with local election administrators and nonprofit groups to help run a voter registration drive, give presentations, or offer fun and engaging activities for your school or classroom.

MiVoice MiVote High School Voter Registration Challenge

With support from the Michigan Department of Education, this challenge helps schools implement preregistration opportunities as mandated by PA 258 (2024).

This program provides educational engagement opportunities, including:

  • Media literacy,
  • Standards-aligned election and voting lesson plans,
  • Voting and polling place simulations,
  • Engagement with local election clerks, and more.

Awards

Each participating school will have the opportunity to earn awards and special recognition from the Michigan Department of State and Michigan Center for Civic Education based on its success in registering a majority of eligible students to vote.

Award categories are as follows:

  • Platinum: 90% and above of all eligible students are preregistered or registered
  • Gold: 80% and above of all eligible students are preregistered or registered
  • Silver: 70% and above of all eligible students are preregistered or registered
  • Bronze: 60% and above of all eligible students are preregistered or registered

  • Every Michigan high school is encouraged to participate. To get started, visit the MiVoice MiVote site.

  • Once you create a profile on mivoicemivote.org or in the MiVoice MiVote mobile app, what happens next depends on your role:

    • Students: Take the pledge to (pre)register to vote, connect to official state sources to complete the process, share your unique access code with classmates to collect more pledges, watch your school climb the live leaderboard, and access civics knowledge quizzes and games to continue learning.
    • Educators: Take the nonpartisanship pledge, share your unique access code with students to collect pledges, watch your school climb the live leaderboard, and access MCCE’s ‘Voting School’ database for downloadable lesson plans, classroom activities, and teaching resources.
    • Partner organizations: Add your organization as an official MiVoice MiVote partner, take the nonpartisanship pledge, share your unique access code with students to collect pledges, watch your organization climb the live leaderboard, and access MCCE’s ‘Voting School’ database for downloadable lesson plans, classroom activities, and other resources.

  • Participating schools are encouraged to host voter registration drives and other election-related programming to empower students 16+ years of age to preregister or register to vote. Resources and guidance on hosting successful voter registration drives will be provided. Drives may be planned by faculty and staff or may take place as a student-led initiative.

  • Upon request, participating schools will be mailed a MiVoice MiVote Toolkit, a 150-page comprehensive civics manual for delivering engaging election and voting education in Michigan, which includes voting signs, voter applications, ballots, ‘I Voted’ stickers, secrecy sleeves, MDOS brochures about election security, and other helpful materials.

    Educators may also request an in-person visit from Michigan Center for Civic Education staff, who can provide support and expertise in planning and running voter registration drives and other election education activities.

  • Registration numbers for participating schools will be tracked through completion of the online "Pledge to Vote" before (pre)registering. Schools will be awarded special recognition based on the following rates:

    • Platinum: 90% and above of all eligible students are preregistered or registered
    • Gold: 80% and above of all eligible students are preregistered or registered
    • Silver: 70% and above of all eligible students are preregistered or registered
    • Bronze: 60% and above of all eligible students are preregistered or registered
