Statement from Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson on the Detroit August Primary
"First and foremost, I am committed to ensuring the integrity of our elections and that every vote counts, in Detroit and throughout the state of Michigan. That is why I and the Michigan Bureau of Elections are reviewing all the data and information from the August primary in order to make a plan to support and assist the Detroit Clerk’s office in preventing errors in November. We expect to share more information next week on our plans to ensure the integrity of elections and accuracy of the results for Detroit this fall. However, we know that many of the problems already identified in Detroit are in part a result of the legislature’s failure to act and update the law as needed to give our clerks additional time to securely process and prepare absentee ballots to be counted on Election Day. That’s why I continue to call on the leaders of the Michigan legislature to be full partners and enact needed legislative changes that will promote the integrity of our elections statewide."
