Secretary of State office in Grand Rapids to close for two weeks for remodeling

Most transactions can be done at Michigan.gov/SOS

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Secretary of State office at 3601 28th Street SE in Grand Rapids will be closed for two weeks during a remodeling project, but most residents can go online to Michigan.gov/SOS instead for their transactions.

The office will be closed Monday, Aug. 4, and will resume normal service at 9 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 18.

The project includes remodeling the SOS counters, adding new dividers and plexiglass to the counters and greeter areas, moving testing areas to a more convenient location within the branch office, and other branch updates.

Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson’s administration has doubled the number of services available online and now most transactions can be done from computer, tablet, or mobile phone.

Self-service stations provide instant registration, driver’s license and ID renewals, as well as some other transactions, and offer nine language options. The nearest self-service stations are located in the Meijer store at 1540 28th Street SE and in the Great Giant Supermarket at 1226 Madison Ave SE, both in Grand Rapids.

Residents who need to come into an office for Secretary of State services during the remodeling period may schedule a visit to the closest alternative office at Michigan.gov/SOS or by calling 888-767-6424.

The nearest offices are located at 3472 Plainfield Ave. NE in Grand Rapids and 1056 Rogers Plaza SW in Wyoming. Both offices are open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., except Wednesdays, when the hours are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
