Benson, Nessel partner on voter education and protection
Discuss partnership in second installment of “Ready for November” video series
Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson and Attorney General Dana Nessel announced their partnership to inform and protect voters ahead of the Nov. 3 general election. They discussed the partnership in the second installment of “Ready for November,” a video series Benson’s office launched this month.
“I’m proud to announce that our respective offices are partnering this election season to support and protect our voters,” Secretary Benson said. “My team will be focusing on voter education and the Attorney General and her team will be countering and prosecuting efforts to misinform our voters and other attempts at voter suppression that are more prevalent than ever before.”
“We want to aggressively highlight voter security and integrity issues. We’ll be alerting voters to common voter suppression tactics as they arise so that people know what is happening,” Attorney General Nessel said. “The best way to counter misinformation is with proper education and information.”
In the video, Benson speaks on the importance of voters only using trusted sources, including the Michigan Department of State website and their local clerk to gather information for Nov. 3. Those with questions can visit Michigan.gov/Vote to research more information, register, request and track their absentee ballot, and find their local clerk’s information and ballot drop boxes.
Nessel described the steps her office is taking to investigate and prosecute attempts to misinform or intimidate voters, including the implementation of a rapid response legal and communications team. The team works to identify, research and pursue legal action in cases of criminal activity, while also ensuring the misinformation is immediately refuted and the public is alerted of the attempt so they can be on guard against it.
