as we celebrate the 54th Annual Professional Municipal Clerks Week

Let It Be Known that it is a great pleasure and a distinct privilege to recognize Michigan’s 1,520 municipal clerks for the professionalism, dedication, and leadership they exhibit every day as they perform their duties and serve their constituents.

Whereas, the week of April 30 through May 6, 2023, will be the 54th Annual Professional Municipal Clerks Week, a time of celebration and reflection on the importance of the vital work of municipal clerks. This observance was initiated in 1969 by the International Institute of Municipal Clerks and endorsed by all of its members throughout the United States, Canada, and 15 other countries; and,

Whereas, the job of municipal clerk as a public servant in local government is one of the oldest documented on record, with roots tracing back to the ancient Greeks, and;

Whereas, one of the many critical duties of Michigan’s municipal clerks is ensuring that Michigan elections are administered securely and fairly, and that precinct workers have the training and resources they needed to perform their jobs, thereby ensuring that every vote is accurately tabulated; and,

Whereas, given the responsibility and weight of the office that Michigan’s municipal clerks hold, the magnitude of their contributions to the smooth running of local government, elections, and protection of our institutions of democracy cannot be overstated; therefore,

In Special Tribute, this document is signed and dedicated to honor and commend Michigan’s municipal clerks for their continued dedication to the citizens of this great state. On behalf of the people of Michigan, I extend my sincere and heartfelt gratitude to our municipal clerks as we celebrate the 54th Annual Professional Municipal Clerks Week.
